Attention: Club and District Bulletins at L.A. Convention
While at the Convention, stop by Booth #245 in the House of Friendship at the Los Angeles Convention Center and take a look at the large display of creative newletters and bulletins. Be sure to take one of your district publications and encourage your clubs to add theirs to the collection, too.

A Tip From Your Editor |

A tip from Editor Karin Blue . . .
Many Rotary graphics are available for use in print or other media. The Rotary website has standard Rotary wheels and other logos here.
A Rotarian from Sweden, Tord Elfwendahl, has refined the graphics from Rotary sites, and has created some beautiful alternatives. His website is called the Library of Graphics for Rotarians. You can find that site here. |

| The Heartbeat: Rotary Heart of America News
Thomas A. Branum, Sr.,
RI Director 2007-2009 |
April 2008 |
Dear Sam,
Here we are with another month rolling around and three-fourths of our year is already gone. April 1st is known by some as April Fools' Day, but we are not fools here in the Heart of America. There is so much good stuff to report this month that we had to leave out a lot to respect your available reading time. By the way, many of you wrote last month to say that you read all the way to be bottom. Stout-hearted souls all.
We introduce a new editor with this edition. D-6560 PDG Karin Blue (03-04) is taking over from D-6780 PDG Karen Wentz (05-06), who is moving on to greater glory with other assignments. Thanks to Karen and welcome Karin. Karin is a member of a user group for the Constant Contact service we use here, so she might be a resource for others who use it.

We are sad to report the death of PDG Paul Luedtke of D-6490. Paul served as DG in 93-94 and again in 03-04.

New Member Postcard
Assistant Governor Paul Wise (D-6110) is a printer who made these welcome cards for all of his club members to send when the member is approved.

How impressive would it be for each new member to get an avalanche of such greetings? Although most clubs will not have someone like Paul to print a supply with the club's return address on it (including postage), the concept might be in interest to some of your clubs. The concept could easily be modified for individual printing from a desktop publishing program. To see a larger version of the of the postcard in Adobe Acrobat, click here. |
Scholar from Zimbabwe
Hosted by D6560 Ambassadorial Scholar Knowledge Mupanda, from Zimbabwe, is pursuing graduate studies in agriculture at Purdue University. His "Todd Scholarship" was funded by an estate gift to The Rotary Foundation made several years ago by Mr. Todd, a member of the Attica-Williamsport club of D-6560.
Knowledge is shown above with Former Dean of Agriculture and Professor of Agricultural Economics at Purdue University, Bob Thompson. Professor Thompson has served as Director of Agriculture and Rural Development at the World Bank and as Asst. Secretary for Economics at the U.S. Department of Agriculture. His topic was World Hunger.

Jacksonville, Illinois 90th
The Jacksonville, IL club (D-6460) celebrated its first 90 years with a dinner and an address by President Wilf. He received a TRF donation from club president Mike Schneider and helped continue a long-time club tradition of distributing dictionaries to third grade students at Franklin Elementary School. District Governor Ron Riggins and I helped recognize 17 new members and their sponsors, as well as 5 new Paul Harris Fellows. PDG Keith Lape assisted with the celebration.

(Almost) All Indiana PETS
In spite of a fierce snowstorm that blanketed the southeastern area of the state, most presidents-elect were present. A fast-paced agenda included Past RI Director David Roper and a missed appearance by another speaker from afar who was snowbound. |
|
MidSouth PETS
MidSouth PETS was held in Nashville, TN with 417 people registered. This PETS includes the entire states of Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama with 335 Rotary Clubs. DGEs are (right to left) Terry Shockley, Carol Larue, Mickey Parrish, Mary Jean Sanspree, Rakesh Sachdeva, and Larry Boyd. Ri President Elect D.K. Lee was the speaker at Friday's dinner. |

RIDN Fred Hahn Reports on Literacy Project
Marge and I have returned from our 5th trip to work on Rotary projects in Honduras. Charlotte Ruoff formed Friends United (FU). I invited her to our Independence, MO Rotary Club where she has been a member for 6 years and is now D-6040's Literacy Chairperson.
FU started with seminars to improve elementary teaching skills in various communities in Honduras. More resources were needed for the teachers. After the first two Resource Rooms in Tegucigalpa and San Pedro Sula were established, the Independence Rotary Clubs, D-6040, and TRF partnered with FU and numerous Rotarians from as far away as New York State. Plans are in place for more such Resource Centers in Honduras.
In the last 2 years, under PDG John Miller's leadership, we have partnered with Buckner's "Shoes for Orphans Souls" program to take 2,500 pairs of shoes to Honduras last year and 5,000 this year.
Other parts of this program, which I believe is an excellent model for future international efforts in literacy, include Traveling Resource Library boxes and two-week training periods for Honduran teachers in the classrooms of bilingual schools in Texas. Over 50 teachers have taken advantage of this opportunity with outstanding progress in the quality of the classrooms served. Both Marge and I sit on FU Boards. |
Special Bulletin
M&M program to be cancelled?
We are looking at the possibility having to discontinue our Heart of America "M&M" promotion of Membership growth and more Money for TRF because RI President Wilf Wilkinson has developed a severe allergy to anything in which the letter "M" is prominent. Therefore, rumor has it that he will no longer schedule appearances on Mondays and might have to clear his calendar for the entire month of May. We are making this important announcement on April !st to allow any affected clubs to adjust accordingly.

Public Relations
Saturday, February 23rd was the 103rd birthday of Rotary International. All clubs were asked to conduct a service project in celebration of the event and to use the event to enhance the image of their club and Rotary in their communities. Lamar Outdoor Advertising donated the use of ten billboard spaces. Public Relations Chair Townes Osborn (Knoxville) received a Public Image Grant from RI that paid for the printing of the billboard material and for 30-second announcements that ran on WUOT-FM during February.
