All twenty four Rotary Districts within Rotary Zones 29 and 30 contributed District Designated Funds to help fund several Rotary Foundation Matching Grants in Bangladesh during the 2007-2008 Rotary year. A brief description of each project is below. As we receive pictures and additional information from some of these projects, webpages dedicated to those projects will be constructed.
MG 64764 - Backpacks for Secondary Students
On June 13, 2007, a major Bangladesh newspaper reported a 47% dropout rate among students entering secondary school. 90% of these students are from poor, rural families, unable to purchase the necessary supplies for their children. This project purchased 4,000 backpacks filled with educational materials to be distributed to students of poor families from rural areas all over Bangladesh. These materials include the backpack, an English/Bengali dictionary, an umbrella, paper, exercise books, geometry tools, pencils, and pens.

MG 65458 - Water Wells - Jessore
Much of the water wells in many areas of Bangladesh are contaminate with arsenic. There is great need for deeper wells and also frequent testing of the water to insure its safety. This project will fund 30 water wells with hand pumps in the Jessore District of Bangladesh.

MG 66831 - Women's Empowerment - Sonoargon Dhaka
This project will fund an educational and training program for 1,000 poor women and adolescent girls in the Mirpur slum area of Dhaka and Sreenagar Upazila in Munshiganj district. It will provide them some basic functional literacy education, and then skills development training in one of several different income generation areas, along with some training in basic awareness about health issues and other human right and empowerment issues.

MG 67243 - Women's Empowerment - Rajshahi
This project was designed to purchase equipment, materials and arrange for training at least 60 poor women living in villages around University of Rajshahi in developing skills in fashion dress making and handicrafts. Training will include fabric cutting, machine sewing, machine embroidery, hand embroidery, Batik and dye, applique, handpainting of fabric, screen printing, block printing and other handicrafts. Training in the areas of raw materials procurement and marketing will be provided. Additionally Rotarians will work with the women, assisting them in getting jobs and developing markets for the sale of their products.
